What is Semaglutide?
Semaglutide is a peptide that works by mimicking a health-promoting hormone called a glucagon-like peptide (GLP-1). GLP-1 is a peptide produced in the small intestine that stimulates insulin secretions and inhibits glucagon secretions, therefore improving blood sugar control. Studies have shown Semaglutide slows how fast your stomach empties food and regulates appetite. Together, these functions can help you feel less hungry, improve your control of eating, and reduce food cravings – all of which aid in healthy and effective weight loss.
Semaglutide is an FDA-approved prescription peptide for type 2 diabetes and weight management. It was first used to help control blood sugar in people with diabetes. However, doctors soon began to see other benefits of this drug, particularly for weight loss. Semaglutide is now helping people lose weight, manage blood sugar, and take control of their life.
What are the Benefits of Semaglutide?
When used with diet and exercise, Semaglutide offers many benefits including:
- Proven healthy weight loss and lowers BMI
- Promotes Lipolysis and accelerates fat loss
- Appetite and meal portion control
- Reduced food cravings
- Lowers HbA1c levels and fasting blood sugar levels
- Improves insulin resistance
- Fertility improvement, especially in patients with PCOS
- Decrease risk of cardiovascular events: heart attacks and strokes
What side effects may occur?
There are potential negative side effects. The most common are nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort. We recommend patients reduce their portion size and stop eating once they start feeling full when starting the medication. This is because your stomach empties at a slower rate when you are on the medication and overeating greatly increases the incidence of nausea.
Additionally, our Semaglutide is compounded with Vitamin B-6, which can help decrease nausea.
Some patients might also experience:
- Constipation, bloating, indigestion
- Headache – usually related to the day of and the day after the injection
- Change in the taste of foods
- Occasional redness, itching, or soreness of the skin at the injection site
Guidelines for Semaglutide
- Semaglutide requires one at-home injection once a week until you have reached your weight loss goals. During your treatment, you will be required to meet with a provider once a month to discuss your treatment and recommended dose
- Medication is injected subcutaneously into the fatty layer once a week
- It is important to follow the instructions and recommended dosing of the medication as directed by the medical provider. Do not make dosage adjustments without your provider’s recommendation.

How to Get Started
If you are a current patient, you can discuss getting started with Semaglutide with a provider at any follow-up appointment (pellet insertion, weight loss/hormone consult, etc) before scheduling an initial Semaglutide consultation with our dietitian. Current patients may also call the office to schedule a 15-minute phone call with a provider to discuss recommendations and get the process started.
New patients will be required to first schedule an initial hormone therapy to consult and complete our introductory bloodwork, before then sitting down with our dietitian for their initial Semaglutide consultation. To get started, all new patients must fill out our initial consultation form and be sure to select your interest in Semaglutide when prompted.

This allows your body to adjust and tolerate the medication better. If you start at a high dose, you will have an increased risk of side effects such as nausea, diarrhea, constipation and abdominal pain
If you maintain your diet and exercise you will not gain weight. If you return to your previous lifestyle habits, you will likely gain weight back.
We strongly recommend that you start a regular exercise program and make reasonable dietary changes to optimize your weight loss while on the medication. This is why we have you meet with our Registered Dietitian monthly to help get you started making these changes
