LATISSE ® (bimatoprost ophthalmic solution 0.03%) is an FDA-approved prescription treatment for Hypotrichosis (inadequate or not enough eyelashes). It increases the growth of eyelashes, including length, thickness, and darkness.
How is LATISSE administered?
A kit is purchased which includes the medication and disposable sterile tip applicators. Once nightly, one drop is placed on the sterile applicator and applied evenly to the skin of the upper eyelid margin at the base of the eyelashes. This applicator will be disposed and the other eye will be treated with a new sterile applicator. It is important to never reuse applicators or to use any other brush or applicator. The medication should not be applied to the lower eyelash margin because it is passed from the upper eyelid to the lower eyelid when blinking.
How long should LATISSE be used?
The full effect is seen at 16 weeks. It is important to continue applying the solution and follow the directions to achieve the best results. If treatment is permanently discontinued, the eyelashes will return to their pre-treatment level.
Who is a candidate for treatment?
There are no contraindications. However, anyone using intraocular pressure lowering eye drops for glaucoma must consult with their ophthalmologist prior to treatment.
Are there any side effects?
Possible side effects include eye redness or itching and eyelid irritation. These symptoms are side effects, not allergic reactions. LATISSE may cause darkening of the upper eyelid skin which may be reversible. Permanent discoloration of the iris (colored part of the eye) may occur if the drops frequently come in contact with the eye.
