What is Botox?
Botox is a purified biologic toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum. Your Wellness Center MedSpa offers two different brands of Botulinum Toxin: Botox® and Dysport®. When Botox® / Dysport® is injected into the specific muscle, weakness of the muscle occurs resulting in relaxation of the muscle and improvement of facial lines. Facial lines can be caused by aging, sun damage, heredity, and gravity.
What areas can be injected?
Botox® / Dysport® is FDA approved for the treatment of muscle spasms, strabismus (crossed eyes), blepharospasm (eye twitching), axillary hyperhidrosis (excessive underarm sweat), and the glabella (frown lines in between eyebrows). Other areas that can be treated off-label by Botox® / Dysport® include forehead lines, crow’s feet, under the eye, bunny lines, eyebrow dropping, smile lines, lines around the mouth, chin dimpling, gummy smiles, and vertical neck prominences.
What is the treatment like?
Our certified injectors will first discuss your desires and then create an individualized treatment plan with you. We offer complimentary consultations to discuss the estimated amount of Botox® / Dysport® needed and a general estimate of the treatment cost. With an established plan, the provider will use a fine needle to inject the Botox® / Dysport® into a specific muscle. The treatment will take less than 30 minutes and requires no downtime.
How often will I need injections?
Once Botox® / Dysport® is injected, improvement of the lines can be apparent after 2-3 days and the peak effect is reached in 7-14 days. Botox is not permanent. The results can last between 3-6 months.
What are the side effects?
The most common side effect is bruising. Aspirin and anti-inflammatory medications may increase this risk. Temporarily discontinuing these medications ten days prior to the Botox® / Dysport® injection may help decrease these symptoms. Minimal redness and swelling are expected. These symptoms may be relieved by applying ice to the area. Very rarely, the Botox® / Dysport® may cause temporary drooping of the eyelid (ptosis). This incidence can be minimized by not touching/rubbing the site of injection and maintaining an upright position post injection.
