Botox & Dysport
What is Botox?
Botox is a purified biologic toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum. We offer 2 different brands: Botox® or Dysport®.
When Botox is injected into a specific muscle, it weakens the muscle for improved relaxation and facial lines (which are caused by aging, sun damage, heredity, and gravity). You check out our breakdown of Botox & Dysport in the video above or watch another video here to learn more.
Why Botox or Dysport?
Both Botox & Dysport are FDA-approved to treat:
- Glabella (frown lines between the eyebrows)
- Muscle spasms
- Strabismus (crossed eyes)
- Blepharospasm (eye twitching)
- Axillary hyperhidrosis (excessive underarm sweat)
Off-label treatment include:
- Lines around the mouth and eyes
- Eyebrow drooping
- Chin dimpling
What’s the difference between Botox & Dysport?
Botox and Dysport are both Botulin toxin A products, however, Botox is the most popular brand name that we all have heard. These injectables are made from two different companies, like Coke and Pepsi or AT&T and Verizon. There are small differences between the two, but overall they are created to do the same thing.
Botox is created by a company called Allergan. When you inject it, you will get an effect usually within about a week. It takes about two full weeks for it to fully wear in.
Dysport, made by Galderma, will start to give results in about five days after injection and takes about 10 days for the whole effect. Therefore, Dysport starts working a little bit quicker.
What are the treatment areas?
Both are FDA-approved to treat the glabella lines (frown lines between the eyebrows).
Off-label areas include:
- Forehead lines
- Crow’s feet
- Bunny lines
- Eyebrow drooping
- Smile lines
- Lines around the mouth
- Chin dimpling
- Gummy smiles
- Vertical neck prominences
How long does one treatment take and how many treatments are recommended?
A single treatment is less than 30 minutes and requires no downtime. Botox and Dysport lasts between 3-6 months, so you will need maintenance treatments every few months. Our experts will discuss lifestyle factors and develop a maintenance plan for you. We may also recommend combination therapy with other popular aesthetic procedures to further enhance your outcome.
What pre- and post-care is required for Botox and Dysport?
There is no pre-care required.
For a full post-treatment plan, please see the “Botox & Dysport take home instructions” in the box to the right. A quick run-down of post-care includes:
- Avoid touching, applying pressure, or massaging the treated area post-treatment
- Don’t lie down or lean forward 4-6 hours post-treatment
- Avoid exercising for 4-6 hours post-treatment
In most cases, you are able to return to work, apply makeup lightly, and resume most of your activities immediately.
When can I expect to see results?
Improvement of lines is noticeable after 2-3 days, and the peak effect is reached in 7-14 days. Botox and Dysport are not permanent and will need maintenance treatments every 3-6 months.
What are the possible side effects?
For more information, please see the “Botox & Dysport consent form” in the box to the right. Our licensed skincare experts will work with you to minimize discomfort and/or side effects.
- Bruising (Aspirin and anti-inflammatory medications may increase the risk; discontinue 10 days prior to decrease bruising)
- Minimal redness and swelling
- Temporary eyelid drooping (ptosis)*
* This can be minimized by not touching/rubbing the site of injection and maintaining an upright position post-injection.
