Urinary Incontinence occurs in two forms: stress incontinence occurs while coughing, sneezing, or running; urgency incontinence occurs when women feel a strong urge to urinate just before losing urine. Some women experience both types, but regardless of what form, urinary incontinence can be quite bothersome.
Two large contributing factors to incontinence are childbirth and weakening muscles over time. Childbirth stretches the vaginal tissue, and with repeated childbirths the vaginal tissue may not be able to return to its’ pre-childbirth state, resulting in a loss of vaginal tone. On the other hand, time can affect women who have experienced childbirth and those who haven’t, because their pelvic floor muscles naturally weaken over time. These muscles are unable to contract as strongly as they use to, contributing to the loss of urine.
