Facial veins are commonly referred to as telangiectasias. Telangiectasias are red, dilated, and broken blood vessels. Common contributing factors to developing telangiectasias include: genetics, steroid use, rosacea, acne, and vascular disease.
An approximate 16 million individuals are affected by rosacea in the United States. Rosacea is a chronic condition characterized by flares and remissions of redness in the face. Rosacea cannot be cured but can be managed and controlled. Caucasians and individuals with fair skin are more commonly affected. Often times, individuals with rosacea blush easily. Rosacea frequently occurs on the cheeks but can also occur on the nose, forehead, neck, chest, ears, and scalp. Sometimes the redness associated with rosacea is accompanied by visible small blood vessels or small red bumps.
The exact cause of rosacea is unknown. However, it is believed that there is a genetic reduction in the ability to control facial inflammation caused by stimuli. Well-known triggers include sunburn, exercise, alcohol, and stress.
