The Top 3 Myths About Menopause – Busted!
By William Lovett, M.D.

Menopause is a daunting experience that every woman must face at some point in her life, whether naturally or because of a hysterectomy. Depending on the woman, it can be the biggest change in hormones since childbirth or even puberty. Unfortunately, this looming hormonal flux has garnered a reputation laced with many myths. I’m here to bust them and help guide you through this change with as little disturbance to your life as possible.

Myth: Menopause starts at age 50.

Truth: Menopause, defined as when a woman hasn’t had a period in 12 full months, can actually start as early as your 30’s or as late as your 60’s. The national average age is 52, but symptoms like gradual weight gain, irritability, and exhaustion can begin to develop years before then. This is known as perimenopause, and happens because your sex hormones (testosteroneestrogenprogesterone) fluctuate, decline, or stop production all together.

Myth: Weight gain is inevitable.

Truth: It’s common for many women to gradually gain weight as they enter menopause, but this doesn’t mean you don’t have options. As your body stops producing as much testosterone, estrogen, and progesterone, your body tries to protect itself by storing extra fat tissue that can be used as a source of estrogen. Luckily, there are steps you can take to limit weight gain, like natural hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and establishing a healthy diet and exercise routine. HRT replaces some of your lost hormones to levels of your younger years, helping you maintain your weight more early and also improving your irritability and fatigue.

You can also get tested for additional underlying health issues like hypothyroidism or Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) that may be manifesting themselves more heavily during menopause.

Myth: Your sex life is dead.

Truth: Sexual health does change as you age, and although this is often considered a “normal” part of aging, it no longer has to be. According to Women’s Health Concern, over 50% of women ages 51-60 will face vaginal dryness, and this gets worse as you continue to age. And that number doesn’t even account for hormonal sexual dysfunction issues like low libido, desire, energy, or passion. HRT helps revitalize your sensual fire, and additional treatments like diVa and the PRP can both help increase natural lubrication, decrease painful sex, and resurface and renew your most intimate layers.
