Patient Story: Joe Strecker

Patient Story: Joe Strecker

This “year in reflection” post was written by one of our most successful patients, Joe Strecker, who has lost over 200 pounds on the Your Wellness Center weight loss program.  We thank Joe for openly sharing his story and hope it inspires others to get healthy and feel better…live better…look better! Follow Joe on Facebook where he continues to update his progress.

“You have about 5 years to live,” the doctor said coldly without looking up from his clipboard.  “Mr. Strecker, I know I am in here to just look at your leg, but you really need to think about changing your life.”

“Did he actually just say that?” I thought.  There is no way that a doctor just said that.  However it was true.  I was killing myself and up until that point, I really did not care.

The TV in hospital room 201 was off.  The only sound you could hear was the shuffling of the nurses outside the door and the sound of sobbing….sobbing from a grown man.

The grown man was in a hospital bed with needles in his arms wearing a white hospital gown.

If you saw this man on the street, I bet you would stare as you walked by for this man was large…very large.  I believe the correct term is morbidly obese.

That man was me.

Those words I heard every day, and even though I knew it.  I really did not care.  Food was my friend.  Sometimes it would even talk to me.

“Come on, Joe.  It’s just one burger…one large fries,….one mountain dew…and an apple pie”

“Your stomach is still growling.  You are hungry.  Eat something”

“It’s just a medium pizza…only eight pieces… You can eat that.”

That’s my story.

It’s hard to anticipate what curve balls life throws at you.  In my case I was killing myself with food and didn’t really care.  It took a life changing event and that happened.

When I healed and finally got out of the hospital, I knew I had to change.  I personally started eating better and exercising.  I actually lost about 30 pounds on my own from the hospital stay and my own program.

I came to a crossroad when Your Wellness Center approached me about helping me and my weight issue.  It was going to be a tough program with daily exercise and a very strict program.  I had to choose either doing it alone or swallowing my pride and taking a chance.  I took a chance.

The program is not easy and you have to make a lot of sacrifices…a lot of “free time” was now consumed by exercising.  Parties, get togethers, and summer BBQ’s were going to be a struggle not to cheat.

Mind over matter.

The pounds began to melt away.

Before I knew it I was under 400 pounds…then 350…then 300.

Now I sit here today over 200 pounds lighter.  I no longer need a CPAP machine.  No more BP meds.  Happy healthy and hopefully one day soon I will be at my goal, and with the help of my new family at Your Wellness Center, I will reach my goal.

From the bottom of my heart I will never be able to thank them enough for their support and help.
