I’m So Tired of Adrenal Fatigue

Adrenal fatigue is characterized by an overwhelming feeling of chronic and/or reoccurring periods of fatigue which is unrelieved with sleep. Other symptoms of adrenal fatigue include:

  • Cravings for carbohydrates, sweet, and salty foods
  • Loss of memory
  • Decreased libido
  • Reoccurring illnesses that seem to last longer

Adrenal fatigue is directly related to the overproduction of cortisol by the adrenal glands located above the kidneys which eventually results in the lack of production of cortisol. It is when this lack of production occurs that the body enters adrenal fatigue. Individuals who suffer from adrenal fatigue often have a strong reliance on caffeinated drinks such as coffee, soda and other stimulates to help start their day or provide an upper in the middle of the afternoon. It is this reliance that can create a vicious cycle by where ingestion of stimulants, with which your body cannot meet the necessary demands for cortisol production and therefore decrease recovery sleep and ultimately produces a stronger daily reliance on the stimulants.

The overproduction of cortisol can occur through a single high stressful event in ones’ life as well as the fast-paced repetitive nature of the 20th century. It is often the chronic accumulation of stressful events that leads to the over-stimulation of the adrenals and eventually failure of the adrenals to properly produce the necessary cortisol to meet the demands of the body and maintain homeostasis.

Every individual is susceptible to adrenal fatigue. Persons with unhealthy lifestyle choices such as poor diet, lack of exercise, little to no sleep and professional pressures are much more inclined to develop adrenal fatigue. These same lifestyle choices though can be altered gradually to help fight your way out of adrenal fatigue. It is suggested to work towards proper nutritional choices, slowly eliminate caffeinated drinks and develop a consistent sleep schedule. A proper hormone balance will often help those later in life fight against adrenal fatigue so it is suggested that individuals have their hormone levels evaluated.
