An interesting question was posed to me recently, and I thought it would be a great question to dissect here. The question was: What is CBD oil and what is it used for? This is a somewhat loaded question, so let’s begin by looking at our own bodies.
Understanding the endocannabinoid system
CBD oil works in our bodies because of something known as the endocannabinoid system. This system is a collection of receptors and molecules on the cells of our body. These receptors respond and relay specific messages or directions to the cells. Cannabinoids like CBD oil are the “keys” to unlock these receptors.
The endocannabinoid system is critical to our health. It helps regulate:
- Appetite, hunger, and digestion
- Immune function
- Pleasure and reward
- Temperature and motor control
- Reproduction and fertility
Put simply, the cannabinoids are the messengers that tell the body to get these processes moving and when to stop.
Hemp vs. Marijuana
Both hemp and marijuana are part of the cannabis family, but they have different properties and uses. Hemp is the industrialized strain of cannabis, and is often used in dietary supplements, salve, skin care, and even clothing. Marijuana, on the other hand, is used for medicinal or recreational purposes. Each are cannabinoids, therefore both have properties to treat certain medical conditions.
The two are often confused with each other because of a decision President Nixon made in the 1970s. During his “War on Drugs”, he signed into a law a list of banned drugs that unintentionally banned and grouped hemp with marijuana. With the increasing research into hemp CBD, it has been legalized as long as it contains <0.3% THC.
Can you get high from CBD?
Short answer is no. CBD is the strain of hemp that can be used for whole health applications. It comes from the female hemp plant cannabis sativa, and is cultivated to only have <0.3% THC. For comparison, marijuana has between 5-35% THC. So you won’t feel “high” or “stoned” by taking or using CBD oil.
What are the benefits of CBD oil?
There are a long list of benefits, but the most common include:
- Pain relief for muscles and headaches
- Anxiety relief
- Reduce cancer symptoms and treatment side-effects
- Anti-inflammatory properties
- Reduce the risk of developing diabetes
CBD oil is legal in every state, but I do have one word of caution: buy organic. It is important to buy CBD oil extracted from organically-grown plants to avoid exposure to pesticides since the hemp plant is heavily sprayed.
I encourage you to research the abundant information out there on CBD oil. CBD oil comes in a variety of oils, lotions, and vape options, so there are many options to suit your lifestyle. I highly recommend giving it a try if you find it’s beneficial to your health!
