CBD Oil 101: What You Need to Know to Get Started
By Judy Couch, FNP-C
CBD products are some of our most popular products in our office. Many of our patients have heard about them online or from friends, and are interested in learning more about this new wave of natural medicine. If you too are interested in learning the basics of CBD, keep reading! I’ve compiled some of the most frequent questions we hear and answered them for you below.
Is CBD illegal?
The biggest question we get is whether CBD is legal or illegal. CBD oil is currently legal in most states, including Ohio. The reason it’s legal when marijuana isn’t is because marijuana has a higher dosage of THC, the psychoactive ingredient. CBD oil won’t cause you to feel stoned or high, so it is considered legal to take.
What forms does CBD come in?
There are several popular ways you can take, apply, or use CBD:
- CBD oil tinctures (oral)
- A vape pen (inhaling)
- Creams (topical)
- Gummies or drinks (oral)
We currently offer vape pens and tinctures from Queen City Hemp. We chose them to source our products because they are transparent on providing their product lab test results. These are tested and certified by a third-party laboratory.
Can I buy good products online?
It’s important to think quality when you’re buying a CBD product. You should look for a trusted manufacturer with proven results. You can purchase some products for very cheap online, but you get what you pay for in terms of quality. These cheaper products may not contain much CBD oil – or any at all.
Are organic CBD products any good?
Yes! Certified organic CBD products are better than non-organic products because hemp is a plant that is highly treated with pesticides. If you ingest non-organic CBD, you could be ingesting more of those bad chemicals than you want. So if you have the choice, go organic!
What are the benefits and uses of CBD?
There are many uses for CBD, but the main benefits include:
- Pain control
- Anti-inflammatory properties
How do CBD products work?
CBD works with our endocannabinoid system, a series of receptors in our brain and organs. The cannabinoid, CBD, can interact with our endocannabinoid receptors to help them work more efficiently. This, in turn, helps the body maintain homeostasis (equilibrium). For that reason, CBD products can benefit your body and help it maintain a healthier balance.
Depending on your body’s unique needs, you may need a higher or lower dosage than someone else. One thing you don’t need to worry about is overdosing, as your body can’t overdose on CBD. Whatever your endocannabinoid system doesn’t use is digested and eliminated.
Are CBD products safe to take with other medications?
CBD can make you feel a little sleepy or more relaxed for an extended period of time, so there are some medications you should be careful using it with. You should consult with your primary physician before taking CBD if you’re on any medication for blood thinning, depression, or chemotherapy. These medications need to be dosed very accurately, as CBD can increase the drugs’ effect in the body.
