By Kaitlyn Hunter, MedSpa Nurse Practitioner

Injectables are extremely popular aesthetic treatments; in fact, our appointments have been booking up fast the past month by clients approaching middle age and noticing more and more smile lines.

But there’s one thing that keeps coming up during our free consultations: is botox or filler better for me?

While they may seem similar, they are actually two very different things. To save you time and help you understand the process before coming in, I’m going to break down the differences. Keep reading to find out which is best for you.

botox or filler

What is botox and how does it work?

Botulinum toxin is a completely natural and purified protein that temporarily weakens facial muscles for relaxation and improved lines. Botox is the most popular brand name of the Botulinum toxin, but we also offer Dysport, another brand.

Does Botox have any side effects?

Because Botox is injected by needle, you may experience a little bruising, redness, or swelling. If this happens, simply apply an ice pack to reduce inflammation.

Who would benefit from it?botox

This treatment is used for men and women who have existing fine lines and wrinkles around their forehead, eyebrows, or eyes – or for the people in their 20s and 30s who wish to prevent wrinkles!

There are also many off-label treatment areas, such as the masseter muscle for TMJ, bunny lines (wrinkles on the nose), and fine vertical lines around the mouth.

How much does it cost?

Botox and Dysport both cost $11/unit.

Dermal fillers

What are fillers and how do they work?

Dermal fillers are made of a natural substance found in your body called hyaluronic acid. It is what gives your skin a healthy, youthful volume. As we age, our body stops producing as much of this acid, resulting in less natural collagen and elastin — and more dimples and dips in our faces.

Do they have any side effects?

restylane filler

Like botox, fillers are injected by needles. The most common side effects are bruising, redness, tenderness, and swelling around the injection site.

Who would benefit from fillers?

Fillers are often paired with botox to create smoother, fuller faces and lips. Thus, they are good for people who are in their 20s and older who wish for more facial volume.

How much do they cost?

Fillers start at $400.
