6 Steps to Keep Your Skin Glowing in Winter

6 Steps to Keep Your Skin Glowing in Winter
By Kaitlyn Hunter, FNP

Most people have broken out their thick, warm, winter wardrobe by now, but they haven’t addressed another important aspect of winter: skincare. They quickly find their hands and face drier, duller, raw, cracked, itchy, flaking, and redder than in the warmer months. In addition to the dull appearance, these skin conditions range from uncomfortable to downright painful.

To help you fight the change in humidity, indoor heaters, and the blustery wind outside, I’ve compiled 6 steps you can take to soothe, hydrate, brighten, and protect your skin this winter.

1. Transition skincare to wintercare

Just like your wardrobe, your skincare needs to be adjusted for different environments. For example, if you have oily skin in the summer, you should be using a lighter moisturizer. However, this same moisturizer won’t cut it on your skin in the winter because your skin will be more dry than normal. Opt for a moisturizing serum in the summer, and a thick cream in the winter.

If you use our Revision Skincare Hydrating Serum in the summer, stop in to pick up a Restorative Night Cream for the colder months.

2. Use night cream on your hands

Cracked, alligator skin isn’t attractive, and it bites hard in the icy breezes. To keep your hands warm and soft all winter long, lather Aquaphor on your hands at bedtime to wake up with soft, smooth hands.

3. Treat your skin to a HydraFacial

Exfoliating treatments can leave your skin dry and tight in colder months, so it’s best to opt for a hydrating treatment instead. Our HydraFacial will plump and hydrate your skin so you don’t have to worry about sensitive skin, acne, or fine lines and wrinkles.

4. Lighten and brighten with a chemical peel

Most people don’t have tans in the fall and winter, which means it’s the ideal time to try a Vi Peel. It’s a great solution to dull skin, acne and acne scars, pigmented lesions, and fine lines and wrinkles. When the skin is well-exfoliated, light reflects easier, giving the skin a brighter appearance. Perfect for this season of holiday parties and photos!

5. Use a hydrating mask once a week

Again, fighting dryness is all about adding hydration to your winter skincare routine. Our Revision Skincare Black Mask does that – and more! Made from the highest quality earth clays from European freshwater lakes, it purifies and soothes skin, unclogs pores, absorbs excess oils, refines the appearance of large pores, and leaves your skin looking extra-polished.

6. Don’t forget SPF

Yes, the overcast skies are here, but that doesn’t stop the dangerous UVA rays from reaching your skin. I talk about the dangers of using cheap sunscreen here, so make sure to catch up on that before buying winterproof SPF.

I highly recommend one of these sunscreens, both of which we carry in our MedSpa:

  • Elta MD – Recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation as effective broad-spectrum sunscreens, they are formulated with transparent zinc oxide and are noncomedogenic, sensitivity-, fragrance-, and paraben-free.
  • Revision SkinCare – Intellishade(R) is their anti-aging tinted moisturizer with sunscreen that conceals, corrects, and protects against UVA and UVB rays. It also contains a blend of antioxidants for added sun protection.
